RADIATOR FAILURES
The question always comes up... should you replace, recore, or repair that damaged radiator?

Replace? - Even a skilled cooling system professional can't work miracles on a radiator that is severely corroded or damaged. The only solution is a new radiator, and the best solution is an all-new Modine complete radiator. Modine Complete radiators give you the assurance of long-lasting performance and efficiency. They're completely new and are designed for your engine and performance needs. Modine radiators fit perfectly, install quickly and easily and are backed by a factory warranty.

Recore? - Some radiator problems can be effectively solved with a new copper/brass or aluminum core from Modine. Recoring can bring your radiator back to efficient operating condition using old tanks, brackets and transmission oil cooler. Your cooling system professional will help you determine whether recoring is a viable alternative. Although your new Modine core carries a limited 6-month warranty, the reused parts cannot be factory warranted against failure.

Repair? - Minor radiator problems can be repaired, although you should be aware that repairing is frequently a short term solution to a long term problem. Copper/brass radiators are bonded with solder which can deteriorate and corrode. The newer aluminum radiators are somewhat more durable, but are also more difficult to repair. Plastic tanks on many newer cars present a different set of problems. For all radiators, higher engine temperatures increase expansion and contraction. Before risking failures and costly engine and transmission damage, consult with a cooling system professional who can advise you of your replace, recore, and repair options.

Fan Damage
Fan Damage
Minor collisions or a failed water pump can result in damage to the radiator.
Over Pressurization
Over Pressurization
Excessive pressure in the radiator caused by a defective pressure cap or engine exhaust gas leak can destroy the radiator.
Cracked Plastic Tanks
Cracked Plastic Tanks
High stress in the radiator can cause premature failure of the plastic tanks.
Steam Erosion
Steam Erosion
Steam can breakdown the plastic tank which will produce thinning and ultimately holes in the plastic tank. Frequently, white deposits are also found.
Leaky Inlet/Outlet Fitting
Leaky Inlet/Outlet Fitting
Leaks in this area of the radiator can be caused by fatigue or by corrosion of the solder joint.
Electrolysis
Electrolysis
Stray electrical current can cause excessive corrosion of metal components.
Electrolysis
Electrolysis
Stray electrical current can cause an electrochemical reaction that will produce voids in tubes.
Fin Deterioration
Fin Deterioration
A chemical deterioration of the fins most often caused by road salt or sea water.
Fin Bond Failure
Fin Bond Failure
A loss of solder bond between fins and tubes. Fins are loose in core. This causes loss of heat transfer and reduces the strength of the radiator.
Blown Tank-to-Header Seam
Blown Tank-to-Header Seam
Usually an indication that the radiator has seen extreme pressures resulting from an exhaust gas leak into the cooling system.
Loose Side Piece
Loose Side Piece
Can lead to flexing of the core and radiator tube failure.
Solder Bloom
Solder Bloom
Solder corrosion caused by poorly inhibited antifreeze. Tube-to-header joints are weakened and corrosion can restrict coolant flow.
Leaky Oil Cooler Fitting
Leaky Oil Cooler Fitting
Caused by failure of the solder joint between the radiator tank and oil cooler.
Internal Deposits
Internal Deposits
Rust and leak inhibitors can form solids that collect in the cooling system and restrict flow.
Tube-to-Header Leaks
Tube-to-Header Leaks
Failure of the solder joint results in coolant loss.

Leaky Tank-to-Header Seam
Leaky Tank-to-Header Seam
Failure of the solder joint or cracked headers is generally the result of pressure cycle fatigue.
